History Group Projects

Over the years Chester-le-Street Heritage Group have carried out a number of projects. The aim of these projects is to research, record and present to the wider community the results of our work. Below are details of some of those projects carried out. They cover various aspect of history associated with the town.

The Bevin Boys

Our latest publication about the Bevin Boys. Men drafted to work in the mines during WW2

1851 & 1891 Census

Research into the 1851 and 1891 Census. To record the social history of the township at that time.

Up and Down the Street

The projects aim was to build a historical record of shops, homes, business and public houses that over the years have resided on Front Street.

Chester Chronicle

A project to digitally record the 24 Volumes of the Chester Chronicle from 1911 to 1935.

Chester Lads & Lasses

To record the Impact World War One had on the town, and remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Ropery Lane Cemetery

This project was to record and where possible take a photograph of any headstone or memorial in the graveyard.

Schools Project

Can You Help. Can you identify any pupils from the Grammar School from 1963.

Collieries Project

To research details of a number of collieries around the area and to publish information booklets on each one
